Dental bridges offer a great solution to fix your smile if you are missing a tooth and want to restore your smile to its original beauty. We realize that it may have seemed like a lot to determine your candidacy in general, and that the choices of dental bridges can be overwhelming, so we have worked together at Weddington Family Dentistry to provide you with the information you need to understand the differences between the three main types of dental bridges that our practice offers.

There are three main types of dental bridges: Traditional fixed bridges, cantilever bridges and Maryland bonded bridges. The Traditional Fixed Bridge is the most common type of bridge. It creates a filler tooth that is supported by crowns placed over top of your healthy teeth on either side of the gap. For this type of bridge to be supported, it is necessary to have strong, healthy teeth on either side of the gap. These teeth will need to be fitted with crowns to provide reinforcement for the bridge to be placed.

What happens if you are missing a tooth beside the gap where the dental bridge will go? If this is the case, a cantilever bridge might be a better option for you. This type of bridge uses more force on an adjacent tooth to support the bridge rather than one right next door, for long lasting results.

If you are missing a front tooth, then the Maryland Bonded Bridges is your best option. This bridge is supported by your adjacent, healthy teeth with a metal wing on either side of the bridge, which is situated behind these adjacent teeth. This option does not require crowns on the adjacent teeth like the traditional bridge does, and will not be visible or hinder your beautiful smile in any way.

Each type of dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth, but each is specialized to treat a specific type of situation.
