Monitoring Your Teens Oral Hygiene Habits
If your teenager has poor oral hygiene habits, it’s not just bad breath that they can get. They will be at higher risk for gum disease, tooth decay, and cavities.
So, if your teenager would have read the above sentence, would they be the type to say “well, so what.”? We are going to give you a few ideas on how to get them to have good oral hygiene habits. It’s very important to let your teen know that if they don’t brush and floss their teeth at least twice a day and coming into the office for some dental checkups, that it can lead to really bad breath and tooth loss. Also, let them know that studies show that people who have bad breath and missing teeth don’t really like others to kiss them. If your teen still refuses to listen to you, try to get their best friend to tell them that it’s a very bad idea not to have great oral hygiene habits.
Pay Attention to What They Consume
Does your teenager dink a lot of soda pop, energy drinks, or any kind of sugary substances? If so then they may believe that losing their teeth could happen to them when they are much older and later on down the road. But this type of thinking is wrong, let them know that if they don’t start brushing and flossing their teeth that it could happen to them when they turn 20 years old. This will be a great opportunity to look up some pictures of 20-year old’s that have lost some of their teeth due to poor oral hygiene habits.
If they still refuse to listen, have them come into the office so we can tell them that having poor oral hygiene habits can lead to severe medical problems. Have your teen talk to us and tell us their feelings on the subject and let us talk with them and try to sway their thinking. Just by them taking ten minutes out of their day to brush and floss their teeth will be the best decision in their life.
