Our Dentist in Concord Shares 5 Ways That You Can Prevent Gum Disease

Gum disease is a condition that causes inflammation around the gums. Over time, it can cause the gum tissue and supporting bone to deteriorate. Untreated gum disease can also lead to tooth loss. Fortunately, there are many ways that you can prevent gum disease. Below are some helpful tips:

1. Brush Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth is one of the best things that you can do in order to prevent gum disease. Brushing removes the plaque, food debris and bacteria that can get trapped in between your gum and teeth. You will also need to brush your tongue because bacteria can hide on the tongue. Additionally, brush for a minimum of two minutes.

2. Floss Daily

Plaque can hide in places that your toothbrush is not able to reach. That is why flossing should be a part of your daily routine. You can also use a floss holder. A floss holder will make it easier for you to insert the floss in between your teeth.

3. Follow A Healthy Diet

Starchy and sugary foods can increase plaque growth. That is why it is important to follow a healthy diet. Vitamins A and C are two of the nutrients that can reduce the risk of gum disease.

4. Avoid The Use Of Tobacco

People who use tobacco are at a greater risk for gum disease. In fact, studies have shown that 75 percent of tobacco users have gum disease. Keep in mind that smokeless tobacco can also increase the risk of gum disease.

5. See A General Dentist

Even if you are taking good care of your teeth, you will still need to see a general dentist on a regular basis. Experts recommend seeing a dentist at least twice a year. A dentist can check you for signs of gum disease. Keep in mind that gum disease is relatively easy to treat if it is detected early. Furthermore, a dentist can give you a thorough cleaning.
