5 Lesser-Known Dental Hygiene Tips from Our Concord NC Dentist

When it comes to oral hygiene, most of us learned to brush and floss down at the local dentist office when we were children. While brushing and flossing daily are both important aspects of good hygiene, there are other habits you can adopt to really impress at your dental exams.

1.) Brush Morning and Night

Plaque and mouth bacteria are most active at night, when your saliva nearly stops flowing and your mouth gets dry. Brush before bed to clean off your teeth, then brush again in the morning to clean up all the bacterial activity from overnight. If you only brush twice a day, these are the best times for doing the best job of it.

2.) Eat ‘Cleanser’ Foods After Meals

If you don’t brush after every meal, have a few slices of apple, a handful of popcorn or a raw carrot to ‘scrub’ your teeth. This can help clear out food particles and neutralize acids and sugars that can damage your teeth.

3.) Brush with Baking Soda Twice a Week

Not only does baking soda freshen your breath, it gently polishes your teeth and helps to remove stains. Replace your toothpaste with it for one or two brushings a week and you’ll notice results quickly, as will your general dentist.

4.) Attend to Your Tongue

All the brushing you do still won’t conquer your bad breath if you don’t scrape your tongue. You can use the back of a spoon or the scraper on your toothbrush to get rid of the bacteria responsible for bad breath.

5.) Stay Away from Alcohol-Based Mouthwash

The compulsion to swish with strong mouthwash before heading down to the local dentist office can be strong. After all, you don’t want to offend anyone with an odor during dental exams. Alcohol-based mouthwash, however, dries out your gums and can actually make your breath worse. Choose an alcohol-free wash for fresh breath without the dryness.

Your general dentist will absolutely notice your efforts if you adopt these tips and add them to your daily routines. If it’s been awhile since your last exam, call us today to schedule an appointment.
